A manufacturer of tubes and cases for the cosmetic and other industries faced significant issues with their degreasing process. The pH levels of their cleaning solution were dropping, requiring constant addition of stabilizers to prevent the solution from becoming acidic and damaging parts. This ongoing issue posed a risk of having to dump the expensive 600-gallon vapor degreasing bath, resulting in costly downtime and the need for expensive chemicals to restart the process.
The manufacturer had an agreement with Hubbard-Hall for their CHAMP program (Chemical Handling, Analysis, Management, and Process Services), which includes weekly testing of the degreasing process. During one of his visits, Hubbard-Hall Analytical Service Technician Bill Russell discovered the pH issue. Russell took samples and noticed the dropping pH levels, leading him to recommend adding more stabilizers. When this didn’t resolve the issue, Russell alerted plant management to a mechanical problem with the degreasing machine.
